Junk food is an informal term applied to some foods which are perceived to have little or no nutritional value, or to products with nutritional value but which also have ingredients considered unhealthy when regularly eaten, or to those considered unhealthy to consume at all. The term was coined by Michael Jacobson, director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, in 1972.

Foods more likely to be considered junk food generally are those that are more convenient and easy to obtain in a ready-to-eat form, though being such does not automatically define the food as "junk food."

Marketing

During 2006, in the United Kingdom, following a high profile media campaign by the chef Jamie Oliver and a threat of court action from the National Heart Forum, the UK advertising regulator and competition authority, Ofcom, launched a consultation on advertising of foods to children. The Food Standards Agency was one of many respondents. As a result, a ban on advertising during children's television programmes and programmes aimed at school aged children (5-16) was announced. The ban also includes marketing using celebrities, cartoon characters and health or nutrition claims.

“ Many teenage girls, already the most poorly nourished of any group in America, have stopped drinking milk or eating meat in their extreme fear of fat. ”

—Frances Berg, MS, Women Afraid to Eat

Eating disorders have increased five-fold among children 8-13, one clinic noting that one child as young as five developing anorexia. According to NHANES III, two-thirds of teenage girls who are trying to eat "healthy" by avoiding junk foods are deficient in iron, calcium and other important nutrients.

What actoully does junk food and or fast food do to your body?
Q. everyone likes junk food and or fast food but do they all know what happens to you when you eat it?, and do you?

A. Fast food does horrible things to your body. Not only is it completely fattening (and artery clogging), it's filled with nasty preservatives that can possibly cause cancer. Leave a french fry out on the counter for a couple of months, and see what it does. You will notice that it turns into a petrified french fry, but it won't ever mold. I am not sure what they use for their fries, or if they even use real potatoes?! Makes you wonder what kind of meat they use. The food is so cheap and actually tastes terrible, but they use special chemicals to make it taste good. So gross!! The fast food culture that we've become is sickening. They have made us so busy that we have little time to go to the grocery store, buy healthy foods, and go home… [cont.]

Q. How can I include junk food/fast food in my diet without gaining weight? Can I do so with moderate daily exercise? My Background: 18 years old, male, 5'10", 136 lbs.

A. Always choose water. Also, when you are eating the junk food, make sure you are eating the serving size. And about fast food, try and pick things that are healthier. Avoid fries, but if you MUST, get the smallest size possible. If you are getting a burger, NO mayo or cheese, no double burgers, no bacon, etc. (like a jr whopper with no mayo is a good example). Get a side salad instead of the fries. If you are getting any kind of chicken, make sure it's grilled, not "crispy". Good luck!

A. Well McDonald's double cheeseburger and fries, then of course I love to eat without milk...coco krispies, and any type of potato chips. It just depends on how much junk food you want. There are always little Debbie's of any kind you cannot get much worse then that!!! But a good corn dog with tons of ketchup is always good. Gotta go and get one of those...
