Q. Whats your fav food and why?
Asked by Amtrak - Sun Nov 30 21:22:03 2008 - - 11 Answers - 5 Comments

A. I love lobster. I find it easy to prepare, and easy to digest. Also, I like making meat loaf and really enjoy cold meat loaf sandwich with mustard the next day. Turkey is great and versatile, and I can make leftovers all week long. Turkey fried rice, Hot turkey sandwiches, Club sandwich to name a few. Sometimes I'm just in the mood for cabbage rolls in a tomato sauce.

What food should I use for urinary problems for a male cat?
Q. My cat Lionel is ten years old and still active. However he has had reoccurring urinary tract problems. I recently took him to the vet and they gave me a cat food (Prescription Diet C/D) which Lionel is supposed to eat for the rest of his life. (It has low magnesium). My problem is that the food is very expensive and I have to go to the vet everytime to get it. Is there another kind of dry cat food that is available? I heard that Nutro is a good brand. Also, I would like suggestions on any alternatives beside the dry food. I can ask my vet these questions but I would like to have a 2nd (and 3rd, 4th etc) opinions from Yahoo answers. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

A. Welcome to the world of urinary problems in cats. My cat just had a stone the size of a nickel removed so I know what you are going through...I hope. Anyway my doctor also gave me c/d for him but she also said that since it is sooo expensive that I could give him purina urinary tract health for it and that would be ok. I hope this answers your question but I do know that for sure. As for other kinds I hope to read your answer and see what you are going to do.

What kind of pet food is healthier to feed your cat, dry food or canned food?
Q. We have been feeding our new cat canned food because that is what the shelter said she preffered. However, we just got back from the vet and learned she has gingivitis. I have also heard that most canned food is essentially the same thing as giving your pets junk food or candy. What's the answer?
Asked by Troy - Fri Aug 31 00:20:52 2007 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Actually feeding both is best. The vet I worked at fed a little canned food and free fed dry through out the day... Canned food is not like candy. It is high in meat content and is good for them, but they need the dry to clean their teeth. Hope that helps!

What is the best food for a cat to gain weigh after nursing kittens?
Q. A mom cat and her kittens adopted my patio a little while ago, and naturally I've been trying to leave some food and water out for them as often as possible. The mom cat was very skinny so I have been feeding her extra foods packed with vitamins and fats, like chicken, special dry & canned cat food, turkey, some beef, and she LOVES biscuits and cheese! :) But she never seems to gain any weight. I want to make sure she is eating enough to produce milk for her kittens and remain healthy, but it doesn't seem to matter what food I give her. Any food recommendations for a nursing stray cat? Also... If they stay around any longer, I will have to take them to the shelter but I'd rather give them to people who will provide a good home. I… [cont.]

A. DO NOT Give "milk milk milk" like the above answer states - cats are lactose intollerant. Give the mother small amounts of yoghurt & PROPER kitten milk (or goats milk - as it is lactose free) out for them. Also, the mother might like some red meat (such as beef) minced & a raw egg in it. You need to make sure the mother's diet is high in calcium so the kittens get the calcium through her milk to ensure they don't have low calcium levels and break their little legs a little while down the track Also, if the mother is now very skinny & not putting weight on, it may be an idea to worm her with a worming treatment that is suitable for breast-feeding queens...as I live in a different country I don't know what is available where you are,… [cont.]

How do food addictions and allergies work?
Q. I read that food allergies can become addictions because our bodies craves the food we are allergic to (some, not all obviously) and can lead to the addiction of that food. This is counter intuitive on so many levels lol So maybe I understood incorrectly. Can someone explain the link between food allergy and addiction? Is this pseudoscience or real? How does it work? Serious answers only.
Asked by professionalkiwi - Sat Jun 6 13:27:46 2009 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I'm allergic to eggs, nuts, peanuts, and tree nuts and I've never heard of this. I'd say it isn't true because once you eat a food your allergic to it makes you feel so uncomfortable and bad that you'd never want to feel that way again. For example once I ate once of those really big Laffy Taffy and who knew those have eggs in them and the little ones don't. Anyway my throat swelled up and it was difficult to breathe. I don't think I'd become addicted to something that makes me feel that awful.

How much fresh food should I supplement a dog's kibble with, and how often should I feed him canned food?
Q. I just got a 2 month old black lab. I tried buying some kibble without so many of the byproducts, preservatives and stuff, but even then I still have my doubts about it. I want to supplement the commercial food with fresh foods, but I don't know how much to give him, nor do I know how much kibble. And how often should I feed him canned food?
Asked by T.B. - Wed Dec 31 00:50:57 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Your dog can be entirely fed on Raw. If you wish to feed a mix of Raw and kibble, and there are some good reasons to do that, then keep the two separate, for instance, feed kibble for the morning meal and Raw for the evening. Research Raw feeding on line, it'll only take a couple hours of reading to understand it, there are several models, and I'd not claim that one is superior to the other. I don't use vegetables myself, just Green Tripe and a SeaMeal supplement, but those who do use vegetables are equally successful. Tripe is a highly recommended starter food to get a puppy on raw, and then I personally start them on whole ground chicken. I wouldn't bother with canned food at all.

Can we tell the difference between junk food and fast food?
Q. I am a Unitarian, and the food of my religion appear to be junk foods because the spiritual qualities are also religious. Even if they are nutritious, is it a good idea to ration them, or eat them in small quantities, because of their halluciogenic properties? I know that junk foods are unhealthy, and I do not eat such foods, but a Big Mac can be mistaken for a garage burger of sorts. Please help me draw the line such as, "One makes you fat, the other makes you high. One has cholesterol, the other has LSD" and so on. How do I get my cat to eat wet cat food instead of dry cat food?
Q. I have heard that dry cat food is bad for your cats health. My cat loves dry cat food and only eats a small amount of the wet cat food. I used to give her dry food in the mornings but now I have started to give her wet cat food as that would be the time when she is the most hungry. This morning she woke me up meowing becuase she was hungry and I fed her one of those small tins of cat food and she only ate half. An hour later she still didn't finish it. I gave her a small pile of dry cat food and she ran straight over and ate it. I don't think it is enough food for her to be eating only one small tin of cat food a day (half in the morning, half at night). A. Good for you! You're doing the right thing. I went through this myself, and it took me two weeks. First, be prepared to waste a bit of money. And to be patient. Buy several different brands of food, and get different varieties of each. Offer a bit of that, and if your cat responds to any, make note of the brand and flavor. It may be that he'll like venison or turkey, or perhaps he'll like any flavor from a certain manufacturer. You are right to switch gradually. I think you could continue what you're doing - offer the dry food once per day - give him 1/2 to 3/4 of what he would usually get. You could even break that into two meals although I don't think that really matters. By reducing the amount of food, your cat still is… [cont.]

What food to sell at a high school's fundraising event?
Q. We're considering chocolate-covered frozen bananas, but aren't sure if they'll sell. Many of the less-exotic foods have already been claimed by other clubs (soda, donuts, burritos, burgers, caramel apples, apple cider, garlic/foccacia bread, fried chicken, fish balls, smoothies, pizza, sushi, tapioca). We are also not allowed to sell food cooked by ourselves. What other food items are likely to sell well? By the way, I live in northern California, so the weather is always pretty mild. Thanks for any and all suggestions!

How much food do you feed your adult cat?
Q. My cat is 1 year old, he's a male and he weighs 12.2 lbs. He looks slightly overweight because he has a gut that hangs down around his waist. I want him to lose weight but dont know what portions of food to feed him. Currently I feed him a half a can of wet food and 1/2 cup of dry food every day, broken up into 4 meals. Am I overfeeding him? How much should I be feeding him? The size can I give him is 5.5 oz.
Asked by Minny715 - Wed Mar 26 11:26:59 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. There is NO such thing as dry "diet" food for cats. Dry foods are filled with carbs that make your cat fat. You can't make a dry food without carbs, so there are no dry diet foods. The proper amount to feed per cat/per day should be about 5.5 ounces of wet (high quality grain free canned or Raw Meat/Bones/Organ) food. The calories in that amount of food are sufficient for most "normal" sized cats. Of course a highly energetic cat will need more food to keep it healthy, and a lazy cat will need less food to keep it from getting obese. But 5.5 ounces of wet food per day is a good place to start. Should I start feeding my cat food formulated for senior cats?
Q. Hello, I have a 7 year old, neutered male cat. Should I start feeding him senior formulated cat food? I also have a 4 year old female. She would be too young to eat senior food. I free feed them by putting their daily amount of food in their bowls and leaving it out all day. So, would it make a difference if I feed him senior food? He will probably snack on her food, and she on his. Thank you.

A. I really wouldn't worry at this stage. If something arises during the annual vet trips, then it can be addressed. My cats range from over 141/2 years to slightly over 2 years in age. They all get the same food, and they are all doing fine. When I was at home we had a cat that lived to be over 23 years, and he didn't have any different diet than when he was young.

How do you make homemade dog food?
Q. I am pretty satisfied with commercial dog food and I have no problem sticking with it, but I would just like to know how to make nutritional homemade dog food. My dogs are a golden retriever, beagle, and dachshund if that information is needed. I don't really want just homemade dog food that isn't any better than commercial dog food. Please help out. Thanks.
Asked by Aaron - Wed Jul 4 00:44:27 2007 - - 3 Answers - 2 Comments

A. Do not feed your dog bones, especially cooked bones. Fragments can become lodged in the digestive tract. Canines in the wild who eat bones have the benefit of consuming hair and hide too, which have been found to pad the bone fragments and aid in their passing. Other foods to avoid that are dangerous for dogs are chocolate, avocados, mushrooms, macadamia nuts, grapes, raisins, onions, and garlic. Try one of these easy dog food recipes and watch your pup smile.

Why are the ants all over my cats food? And what can I do to get rid of them?

This only happens when I put the food bowl on the tile kitchen floor and the tile bathroom floor. I have put out ant traps but they didn't seem to work and I was worried that my cat might get into it. I am afraid to spray anything in case it gets on the food or the cat injests it somehow. A. I have found the Grant's ant stakes to be effective in getting ants out of my home. There is no way a cat can get into them and be poisoned. If you are leaving dry food out for your cat it is really not a good idea. It is much healthier for the cat to have two "meals" a day even if your return in the evening is somewhat erratic. The cat will not starve waiting for your return. When dry food is out all the time the cat's digestive system is always in an "on" mode. This means that blood and digestive juices are constantly in the cat's stomach and the healthy fresh blood is not available for the maintenance of other important organs in the body.

What tax category are food purchases for food sales rep?
Q. My husband is a food sales rep employee in which he also gives consultations/suggestions for restaurants. As a result, he eats at many of his customers' restaurants to try their food or at potential customers' restaurants. This should be tax deductible because it's for his job in which he is trying their food and/or trying to promote business. However, I don't think this would fall into the meal category which is only 50% deductible. Anyone know what category this would fall into?
Asked by Annie - Tue Sep 2 06:40:56 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. If he's eating at their restaurants with an eye towards promoting their restaurant, THEY should be paying for the meals. Meals taken in the vicinity of your tax home are not deductible. A food critic might have an argument but your hubby does not.

We would like to feed her twice a day, but we don't know how much to feed her and she is already starting to get a little chubby. She also tries to eat the dog food when she has none. Also, is Neutro a good brand? Thank you for your help!

A. The recommended serving is the total amount to feed a cat per day. Since she is still a baby, break that 1/3 cup into a couple of smaller meals a day. Don't give her 1/3 cup each serving. You'll wind up with a chunky cat.
