Food is any substance, usually composed of carbohydrates, fats, proteins and water, that can be eaten or drunk by an animal or human for nutrition or pleasure. Items considered food may be sourced from plants, animals or other categories such as fungus or fermented products like alcohol. Although many human cultures sought food items through hunting and gathering, today most cultures use farming, ranching, and fishing, with hunting, foraging and other methods of a local nature included but playing a minor role. Most traditions have a recognizable cuisine, a specific set of cooking traditions, preferences, and practices, the study of which is known as gastronomy. Many cultures have diversified their foods by means of preparation, cooking methods and manufacturing. This also includes a complex food trade which helps the cultures to economically survive by-way-of food, not just by consumption. Many cultures study the dietary analysis of food habits. While humans are omnivores, religion and social constructs such as morality often affect which foods they will consume. Food safety is also a concern with foodborne illness claiming many lives each year. In many languages, food is often used metaphorically or figuratively, as in "food for thought". GNU Free Documentation License What pet food is good for a one year old cat? Q. I just got my first cat, and he is about 7 months old now. I know I should switch up his food soon from the kitten formula to something, but I want to know which food is best for him. I know foods like Purina and such is like feeding your cat fast food leftovers. (and in some cases spoiled leftovers lol) So I want something good for him, but a lot of the brands I see like Wellness is $13 a bag. Any suggestions on a happy medium? There are a lot of great articles on cat nutrition at in Dr. Jean Hovfe's article library. Read: "What Cats Should Eat". "Why Cats Need Canned Food", "Selecting a Good Commercial Cat Food", "Urinary Tract Disorders in Cats" etc. Those are all at the end of about fifty articles on cat nutrition, health and behavior. Whatever the cost of feeding your cat a quality food it will pay off for you in fewer veterinary bills in the long run so it is a worthwhile "investment" even if it seems expensive. Answered by old cat lady - Mon Jun 4 22:16:57 2007 How much food and water do I need to supply my cat when I go away for 3 weeks? Q. I live alone and have a new cat but need to go away for a 3 week business trip. If I leave a very big bowl with 21 days worth of food and a big bowl with 21 days worth of water will that be enough? Should I leave extra food in case the cat mismanages its intake and eats all the food and drinks all the water in the first 10 days? Please find someone to come in daily or at the least every other day to feed your cat and give it fresh water, clean the litterbox and play with it. that is way way way way too long for a cat to be left alone for. 48 hrs is too long. if you can't find someone to come into your home to take care of your cat you should find somewhere to board your cat, maybe the vet's office will do it or know of a good place.
