Old English etan, from Proto-Germanic *etanan, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ed-. Cognate with Scots aet, Dutch eten, German essen, and Swedish äta, and (from IE) with Ancient Greek ἔδω (edō), Latin edō, Russian есть, and Lithuanian ésti.
